Embraer and Northrop Grumman have moved their KC-390 tanker effort forward with a new joint-development push focused on adding an optional, autonomous refueling boom to the aircraft, alongside upgrades such as enhanced communications, situational awareness, survivability options, and adaptable mission systems. In Embraer’s announcement, the companies framed it as a joint investment aimed at giving the KC-390 stronger air-refueling relevance for the U.S. and allied markets, especially in agile/distributed operations.
The strategic value is straightforward: the KC-3currentlyday uses probe-and-drogue refueling, but a boom-equipped version would expand compatibility with aircraft that use the USAF-style boom method, including fleets like the F-35A, F-15, and F-16, which significantly broadens the potential customer base. FlightGlobal also reported Embraer wants the boom as a modular option for both new-build aircraft and retrofits for existing KC-390 operators, making it a much more flexible export proposition.
