Etihad Flight Aborts Takeoff at Melbourne

On January 5, 2025, an Etihad Airways Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operating Flight EY461 from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi was forced to abort takeoff due to a technical issue. The incident occurred as the aircraft accelerated on the runway at Melbourne Airport.

During the aborted takeoff, the aircraft’s tires reportedly burst due to the high-speed braking. This caused the plane to remain stationary on the runway for nearly 14 hours, significantly disrupting airport operations. Emergency crews promptly responded to the scene, and all 289 passengers and crew onboard were safely disembarked. No injuries were reported.

The airline issued a statement emphasizing the professionalism of the crew and their adherence to safety protocols in handling the situation. Passengers were provided alternate travel arrangements and accommodations while the aircraft underwent inspections.

The incident caused several flight delays and diversions at Melbourne Airport, as one of its main runways was temporarily closed. Engineers are investigating the technical issue that led to the aborted takeoff, and maintenance teams are assessing the damage caused to the aircraft.

This event underscores the importance of well-maintained aircraft systems and prompt emergency response to ensure passenger safety during unexpected situations.
