On October 14, 2025, an American Airlines Airbus A321-231 (N587UW) operating AA274 from Los Angeles (LAX) to New York–JFK performed an air-turnback after fumes were reported in the cabin, causing discomfort among passengers and crew. The aircraft climbed to about 5,400 ft before the pilots, who told air traffic control they could smell and even “taste” something unusual in the air, requested an immediate return.
LAX emergency services met the flight on arrival. Passengers deplaned normally, and the jet was taken out of service for maintenance checks. American said customers would be re-accommodated on later departures.
