On October 30, 2024, Airbus delivered the first Airbus A321XLR to Spain’s national carrier, Iberia, making it the launch operator of this extended-range aircraft. The A321XLR (Extra Long Range), designed to offer a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles, allows airlines to operate transatlantic and other long-haul routes with a single-aisle plane, offering greater fuel efficiency and lower operating costs than traditional wide-body jets.
Powered by CFM LEAP-1A engines, Iberia’s new A321XLR is configured with 182 seats in a two-class layout, featuring both lie-flat business seats and enhanced economy seating, aimed at increasing passenger comfort on long flights. Iberia plans to operate the aircraft on short-haul European routes initially, enabling crews to familiarize themselves with its features, before officially deploying it on the transatlantic Madrid-Boston route starting on November 14, 2024. This addition aligns with Iberia’s strategy to expand its long-haul offerings in an efficient, eco-friendly manner.
Airbus’ commercial chief Christian Scherer highlighted that the A321XLR “opens a new chapter in air connectivity,” enabling airlines to expand their network with new non-stop destinations previously difficult to reach with single-aisle aircraft. The aircraft’s extended range is achieved through a large aft center fuel tank, allowing for the unprecedented range in narrow-body jets while maintaining fuel efficiency, which Airbus reports is 30% better than previous generation aircraft on a per-seat basis.
