KLM Warns De-icing Fluid Shortage May Prolong Delays

KLM has warned that it is running short of aircraft de-icing fluid at Amsterdam Schiphol following several days of severe winter weather and exceptionally high usage rates. The airline said the constrained supply could prolong flight cancellations and delays as operations remain heavily impacted by snow, ice, and freezing temperatures.

According to KLM, the sustained need for repeated de-icing treatments, combined with logistical challenges in replenishing supplies during the cold snap, has placed additional pressure on already reduced airport capacity. Schiphol has faced multiple days of operational restrictions, with runway availability, ground handling, and aircraft turnaround times all affected.

The airline cautioned passengers that recovery will take time even as weather conditions gradually improve, noting that aircraft and crew positioning across its network have been disrupted. KLM advised travelers to check flight status before heading to the airport and to expect continued knock-on effects across its short- and long-haul schedule while de-icing resources are stabilized.

The situation highlights how prolonged winter conditions can strain airport supply chains, with de-icing fluid availability emerging as a critical bottleneck in large-scale operational recoveries at major European hubs.
