LATAM 777 High-Speed RTO at GRU

A LATAM Airlines Brasil Boeing 777-32WER (777-300ER), PT-MUH, operating scheduled long-haul LA8146 from São Paulo–Guarulhos (GRU) to Lisbon (LIS), carried out a high-speed rejected takeoff on 15 February 2026.

Local reporting indicates the takeoff roll on Runway 10L was already very advanced, with the aircraft reaching roughly 178 kt groundspeed (~330 km/h) and the nose gear briefly lifting, before the crew rejected the takeoff and deployed reverse thrust while braking heavily. The aircraft slowed safely, exited near the end of the runway, and stopped on a taxiway.

Observers captured glowing brakes and smoke, consistent with a high-energy stop. Airport emergency services responded and cooled/contained brake-area heat; photos and subsequent reporting noted multiple deflated tires, which commonly occur when wheel “fuse plugs” release pressure to prevent wheel rupture during extreme brake heating.

Passengers were later deplaned via stairs/bus and rebooked, with LATAM stating only that the takeoff was interrupted “in total safety” per protocol and without publicly detailing the initiating technical trigger. Some passenger accounts suggested an engine overheat indication, but that has not been confirmed in an official technical disclosure.
