On March 11, 2024, a LATAM Chile Boeing 787-9 performing flight from Sydney to Auckland encountered a serious dive. The aircraft was en route at FL410 over the Tasman Sea when a cabin crew rested her elbow on the cover of the switch that electrically moves the pilot seat forwards and back. The pilot seat started moving forward with the captain in his seat, pinning him against the yoke and deactivating the autopilot. The yoke was pushed forward and the aircraft nosed down violently. Passengers not seated with their seatbelt hit the ceiling. The co-pilot recovered the aircraft at 9000 feet, and the people who had not buckled in fell back down. Fifty-plus passengers were injured.
