AirAsia Linked To Major Airbus A220 Order

AirAsia has been linked to a major potential order for the Airbus A220, as Airbus prepares what it described as a “historic” announcement for the aircraft program at its Mirabel assembly site in Canada.

Reports said the deal could cover around 150 A220 aircraft, making it one of the largest orders in the program’s history. Airbus had scheduled the announcement for 6 May 2026, although the customer had not been officially confirmed in the early reports.

If finalized, the order would represent a significant move for AirAsia, which has traditionally built its short- and medium-haul operations around the Airbus A320 family. The smaller A220 could give the group more flexibility to serve thinner routes, open new destinations and improve efficiency on markets where larger aircraft may not be ideal.

For Airbus, a large AirAsia commitment would be an important boost for the A220 program. The aircraft, originally developed by Bombardier as the CSeries before Airbus took control of the program, competes in the 100- to 150-seat segment and has faced pressure from Embraer’s E2 family.
