Boeing expects around 30 early-build 777X aircraft to require modification and upgrade work before they can be delivered to customers, highlighting the complexity of bringing the long-delayed widebody program into service.
The aircraft were built during earlier phases of the program and will need updates to align them with the final certified production standard. Such work can include configuration changes, system updates, structural adjustments, and other certification-related modifications before handover.
The requirement comes as the 777X continues moving through its certification campaign. Boeing has been working to complete testing and regulatory approvals for the aircraft, which is set to become the company’s newest long-haul widebody.
Although the modification work adds another layer of complexity, it also reflects Boeing’s effort to ensure early production aircraft meet the required standard before entering airline service. The 777X remains a key part of Boeing’s future widebody strategy, offering improved efficiency, capacity, and range for long-haul operators.
