EgyptAir has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737-8 MAX, marking a major step in the Egyptian flag carrier’s fleet modernization program.
The aircraft, registered SU-GGM, is the first of 18 Boeing 737-8 aircraft being leased from SMBC Aviation Capital. It is also the first 737 MAX to join an airline fleet in Egypt. The aircraft arrived at Cairo International Airport on 2 May 2026 after a delivery flight from Seattle via Reykjavik.
Boeing and EgyptAir announced the delivery on 3 May, describing the aircraft as an important part of EgyptAir’s plan to renew its narrowbody fleet. The 737-8 will complement the airline’s existing Boeing 737NG aircraft while offering improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and operational commonality for pilots, maintenance teams, and ground crews.
EgyptAir is expected to use the new aircraft on short- and medium-haul routes, including services to major European and regional destinations such as Paris, Brussels, Istanbul and Vienna. The type gives the airline a more modern and efficient aircraft for high-demand routes from Cairo.
The delivery also strengthens EgyptAir’s long relationship with Boeing. The airline already operates several Boeing types, including 737NGs, 777s and 787 Dreamliners. With the arrival of the 737 MAX, EgyptAir continues its transition toward a younger, more fuel-efficient fleet.
More 737-8 deliveries are expected in phases over the coming years as part of the 18-aircraft lease agreement with SMBC Aviation Capital.
