Joby Aviation has completed a series of electric air taxi demonstration flights in New York City, marking a high-profile step for the company’s planned urban air mobility service.
The company said the flights included the first point-to-point eVTOL air taxi demonstrations in New York, with routes involving John F. Kennedy International Airport and Manhattan heliport locations. The campaign was designed to show how electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft could eventually connect major airports with dense city centers.
Joby’s eVTOL aircraft is designed to take off and land vertically like a helicopter, while flying more quietly and efficiently using electric propulsion. For cities such as New York, this could allow future passengers to bypass road congestion and reduce travel times between airports and key business or residential areas.
The demonstration is especially important because New York is one of the world’s most visible aviation and transport markets. Helicopter transfers already operate between Manhattan and regional airports, but eVTOL developers argue that electric aircraft could provide a quieter, lower-emission alternative.
The flights also come as Joby continues working toward certification and commercial launch. Before regular passenger service can begin, the aircraft must complete regulatory approval, operational testing, infrastructure planning, and integration with existing air traffic systems.
