A new United Airlines Boeing 787-9 operating from Singapore to San Francisco, UA2, on April 24, 2026, returned to Singapore shortly after departure following an emergency call from the flight crew.
The aircraft was reportedly operating a long-haul service to San Francisco when the crew detected an electrical odor or a burning smell on board. As a precaution, the pilots discontinued the transpacific flight and turned back to Singapore.
The Dreamliner landed safely, allowing the aircraft to be inspected before any further operation. Incidents involving unusual odors or possible electrical smells are treated seriously, particularly on long-haul flights where crews must ensure the aircraft is safe before continuing over remote oceanic routes.
