A United Airlines Boeing 767 landed safely at Newark Liberty International Airport after striking a light pole and a tractor-trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike during final approach.
The incident involved United Flight 169, which was operating from Venice, Italy, to Newark on Sunday afternoon. According to initial reports, the aircraft struck a light pole while descending toward the airport. The aircraft also struck a tractor-trailer, and the pole later hit a Jeep on the roadway.
Despite the unusual impact, the aircraft continued to Newark and landed safely. There were 221 passengers and 10 crew members on board, and no injuries were reported among those on the aircraft. The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was treated at a hospital before being released.
Authorities reported minor damage to the aircraft, including damage to the underside and a tire. Airport personnel inspected the runway for debris before normal operations resumed. United said its maintenance teams were evaluating the aircraft and that the crew had been removed from service while the airline conducts a safety review.
